Case Study
Sonora
Personalized sound experiences for sleep, focus, calm, and performance.
Role
Lead UX Designer, Technical Artist, Project Lead
Focus
Designing an easy-to-use experience around advanced audio systems guided by real-time biological signals
Artifacts
UX architecture, generative audio engine, real-time visuals, interaction systems
The Problem
The product had strong scientific foundations but lacked an experience that users could intuitively understand. The complexity of sound therapy and biofeedback risked overwhelming users, creating friction where calm and clarity were essential.
The Goal
Design a seamless, emotionally resonant experience that made advanced technology feel simple, trustworthy, and relaxing, guiding users naturally toward sleep, focus, meditation, or performance states.
Constraints
The system needed to run real-time audio generation, dynamic visuals, and background playback across devices while remaining lightweight, stable, and visually refined.
My Approach
I designed the UX around minimal choices and narrative flow, removing cognitive load and guiding users through clear stages. Each interaction was purposeful, calm, and story-driven to reinforce ease of use.
Execution
I led the full project from experience strategy to delivery, assembling and guiding a cross-functional team of three developers (iOS, Android, and frontend) and a musician. I implemented the full experience as a technical artist, building the interaction systems, real-time visuals, and performance-optimized environments, while collaborating with a visual designer provided by the client, Booth.com Ltd.
Core System: Generative Sound
I designed the modular audio engine that defined how solfeggio frequencies, binaural beats, ambient layers, and natural sound elements blended into evolving soundscapes. The compositions were created by Connor Dougan based on this system, ensuring each experience delivered texture, rhythm, melody, and immersive depth aligned to user goals.
Visual Language
Flowing wave patterns inspired by the Sonora desert dunes formed a calming real-time environment that subtly reacted to sound, reinforcing presence and emotional connection.
Impact
The product translated complex sound therapy technology into a clear, calming, and intuitive experience from day one. Its modular audio system enabled the creation of a large library of unique soundscapes efficiently, while the UX and visual frameworks established a scalable foundation ready for launch and long-term growth.
Key Learnings
Designing across real-time systems and background audio states reinforced the importance of building holistic experiences that consider technical behavior beyond the screen.
